Big Sur’s one of those places that’s absolutely amazing. You can hike in mountainous forest and look over to California’s beautiful coastline. If you’re driving up Highway 1, you can pull over at one of the many scenic stops and take pictures of the deep blue Pacific Ocean.

Last New Years Eve, The BF and I decided to skip the binge drinking, formal attire, and NYE parties and go to Carmel and Big Sur. We splurged for one night at Carmel Valley Ranch and got up the next morning to headed for a day of hiking at Big Sur. I can’t even describe how wonderful it was to sit by the sparkling blue water WITHOUT A New Year’s Day HANGOVER and without the desire to vomit on myself like the classy lady I am.

I think we’re going to try to do something like this every New Year’s Day from now on.

Three outdoor activities at Big Sur:

1. McWay Waterfall Trail: Really short trail that leads you to a waterfall with the bluest movie-esque waters ever. Simple and easy and don’t forget to bring your camera!

2. Ewoldsen Trail: This is a much longer hike. Be prepared with your hiking shoes. Towards the top of the trail, we decided to stop and eat our packed lunches. This was our 2008 New Year’s Day view:

3. Driving up the Coast: This really doesn’t sound that interesting until you actually do it. As a Californian, even I forget how gorgeous my state is. But if you’re not into that but still have to drive Highway 1 anyway, then stop off and watch the cows. If you’re as lucky as we were, you’ll catch some cow p0rn going on.
